Indigenous Post-Secondary Education

With over 10 years of leading Indigenous Initiatives in post-secondary, I have developed several programs in supporting Indigenous students to succeed in their post-secondary journey. Here are some details of my experiences:

  1. Building relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations: Collaborating with Indigenous communities and organizations can help you gain a better understanding of the needs of Indigenous students and create meaningful partnerships to support their success.
  2. Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment: Ensure that the campus environment is welcoming and inclusive for Indigenous students, and that they feel supported and valued as members of the community.
  3. Incorporating Indigenous Knowledge and perspectives into the curriculum: Ensure that Indigenous knowledge and perspectives are integrated into the curriculum, and that Indigenous students have opportunities to learn from and contribute to the knowledge base of the college.
  4. Providing culturally appropriate support services: Offer culturally appropriate support services to Indigenous students, such as access to Elders, Indigenous student support staff, and peer mentors.
  5. Engaging with Indigenous students and seek their feedback: Engage with Indigenous students and seek their feedback on how the college can better support their needs and create a more inclusive and welcoming environment.

By incorporating these strategies into my work, Indigenous students feel supported and valued, and that they have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed in their post-secondary journey.

Ottawa Tourism and Algonquin College were proud to collaborate on the development of the Indigenous Tourism Entrepreneurship Training initiative, piloted in 2020. This successful pilot initiative was designed to help kickstart Indigenous tourism businesses and provide training on how to start a business and be an entrepreneur. It was also perfect for Indigenous business owners who were looking to upgrade skills, network, and get a new initiative off the ground. Welcome to the Indigenous Tourism Entrepreneurship Training!

Algonquin Times 3 Drums 3 Campuses

“For many Indigenous people, the drum is the heartbeat of Mother Earth; that’s what one of our Elder’s shared with me,” says Andre O’Bonsawin, Manager of Indigenous Initiatives for the College." “What we’re trying to do with this project is embed Indigenous Knowledge and cultural teachings in the College.
